Cayadutta Tanning Company: Inside Gloversville's Dead Tannery

Image
The Pink Flamingo on Harrison Street Whether it is a dead mill or tannery, a car will always be sitting in a discrete corner.  Gloversville, New York, earned its name for a reason. For decades, it was the undisputed glove capital of the world. But today, the massive tanneries, dressers, stitching factories, and dyers that built this city are quietly disappearing. One of the most fascinating casualties was the former Cayadutta Tanning Company Inc. Locals called it the Pink Flamingo. Before that, it was E.S. Parkhurst & Company, a place workers simply knew as the Hair Mill. Sitting at the southwest corner of Harrison Street and NY-30A, the property spanned two parcels. A private owner held one piece of the land, while the city owned the other. Visiting the abandoned site felt like stepping into a forgotten tannery that just needed a bit of TLC and elbow grease to restart operations sans a pocketed overhead roof. Just outside the main tanning building, a junked Mercedes sa...

NFT Art Wall in Brooklyn

Image
With the explosion of NFT art online it was only time before someone brought it from the computer pixels into the real world with an awesome mural. This Brooklyn NFT mural wall showcases the premier NFTs that gave profound fame and monetary glory to artists all over the world. It took me some time to reach here but I was glad I came to marvel at this superb display of 2021's best moment in time.

Pixel Shifting Whilst Urbexing Using A Sony a7R IV

Image
Last week I had the opportunity to go out in the field to find interesting subjects to pixel shift using Sony's latest a7R series the a7R IV. I always wanted to find out what I could bring back using this feature that allows users to create in-depth and highly detailed pictures using 16 shots combined into one.  218.0MP Pixel Shift File Denoising Buttery and soft. Now I have come back with results and I have found that it can be done in dilapidated warehouses and other decaying buildings but during my pixel-peeping foray I found that the background was quite soft and muddy. I happen to believe this may due to the focusing area not being selected correctly or my Zeiss Batis 25mm is not as sharp as it touts to be which could be farthest from the truth. I surmise maybe the shifting daylight may have distorted the picture but I can only test that hypothesis on another field test in whether that may not be the case.  In the example above, the 'PENT' graffiti was taken without a...

Historic S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse

Image
What had remained from the continuing demolition with the BQE highway in the background.   Consisting of a two-block complex this four-story 200 by 80-foot brick building featured end-gabled structures with a central transverse firewall and eight round-arched window bay openings. This storehouse was accompanied by a feed mill removed in 1904-1915 and a feed storage building also on the lot. A warehouse that once fueled New York City's four-legged transports throughout the area. The warehouse was established in 1886 as a storehouse for grain, feed, and hay processing which also included a feed mill. The large property owner and independent operator Samuel Winter Bowne became noted on the New York Produce Exchange as having the commercial capacity to store 600,000 bushels onsite.  Eventually, the storehouse complex no longer became a major economic engine for the City once in the 1930s the city moved away from horses to cars and trucks as canal grain traffic started to dry up ...

Stillmanville Woolen Mill (Connecticut Castings Mill)

Image
Exterior of Stillmanville Mill from the street. Approaching the Connecticut Castings Mill also known as the Stillmanville Mill there were about three vacant boats lined up on the pathway to the mill in various states of disrepair and conditions. From time to time I have found various forms of recreational vehicles at various mills across the Eastern seaboard. From old cars to aquatic vehicles, I have found at least one vehicle whether stripped down to its frame or fully left to rot like it was left a few months ago. Mills always have something sequestered within the old decaying spaces within its walls. This mill was no different.  One of my favorites from here.  "Let me drive the boat" in my best Kodak Black voice Stillmanville would not be so named if it was not for the man known today as Oremus M. Stillman who established the industrial neighborhood as Rhode Island became the forefront of the American Industrial Revolution.  Along with where Canal Street runs, Samuel B...

Portimao Blue Metallic 2021 BMW M4 Competition

Image
I had fun with this shoot the other day. Learned quite a lot and found it quite challenging to find compositions and perspectives. Car photography is not my cup of tea but with some more work and more time with different colorful subjects I can definitely see loads of improvement. Two major things I learned are to make sure the car is cleaned and free of water spots. Lastly, DO NOT FORGET your polarizer filter. #bmwna #bmw #bmw4 #cars #M4 #carphotography #bmwcoupe

Brooklyn's Secret Cove

Image
One of Brooklyn's best-kept secrets or shall I say the most underdeveloped park in Brooklyn. Herein lies a small hidden cove home to an abandoned boat that has been permanently moored in this cove as far back as 2012. Will Ellis, AbandonedNYC's , writer and explorer, checked out this small waterfront way back in the day in 2014. In addition, Atlas Obscura also wrote a small undated piece on this abandoned vessel. A couple months ago, a generous low tide allowed me to get up close and personal with this wet bucket of metal, plastic, and seaweed. I've always had it on my ever-long and expanding list of locations to visit since I viewed it on Will Ellis' website years ago when I was giddy with excitement when I first started exploring as a hobby and now as a serious life endeavor. I can see why it can be considered a "secret cove" since it is pretty much off the beaten path. You wouldn't know it was there if you didn't trudge through the grass and lo...
