Archives #5: Best Graffiti Piece of 2017



I believe this to be one of the best graffiti works I have ever come across in my explorations during last year. It even beats out the Brooklyn skull mural that I found to be widely creative and great use of an abandoned space. The intricate detailed eyes and wrinkles. The use of the full length of dry wall really captured my attention once I entered this warehouse in Pennsylvania.

Yonkers Glenwood Power Plant

A former coal-fired power plant in Yonkers sits quietly by the waterfront, its redevelopment ambitions repeatedly running aground against community resistance and logistical hurdles. Once an industrial hub, the site has spent years in limbo, tangled in unrealized visions of transformation and contention with local stakeholders. The most recent development proposal called for a 157,000-square-foot mixed-use office space. However, the Yonkers Planning Board faced strong pushback from residents. Parking became a flashpoint, with the community voicing concerns over how the new project would accommodate vehicles. Efforts by the developer to secure parking access at nearby Trevor Park and the John F. Kennedy Marina were met with such resistance that the plans were scrapped altogether. Fiskdale Upper Mill

I still remember the long walk from where we parked the car. As we climbed the steep, winding road, the Fiskdale Mill gradually came into view, its silhouette a reminder of a bygone era. Just before reaching the main structure, we veered into the trees on the right side of the road, carefully navigating toward the entrance. Earlier, from the car, we had noticed no signs of recent activity around the mill, but we moved forward cautiously nonetheless. The moment we stepped inside through a wide-open door, it was as if we had entered another world. The sight was almost surreal—piles of wooden furniture stretched out across the vast mill floor. Tables, chairs, stools, and other pieces filled the space, creating a maze of craftsmanship frozen in time. As we moved deeper inside, the building’s character began to reveal itself. The Story of the Tiffany Mill (Quinebaug Mills)

  In July 2024, the historic Quinebaug Mill met its fate, reduced to rubble after standing for over a century. Despite plans to transform the site into residential apartments, the project fell through. The primary roadblocks were a mix of logistical challenges and financial impracticalities. The Town of Killingly’s sewer system, already nearing capacity, couldn't accommodate the additional strain a large housing development would bring. Alternatives, like installing a private septic system, proved just as unfeasible, leaving developers with few options. In the end, the mill’s long decline culminated in demolition, another chapter closed in the story of New England’s once-thriving textile industry. Unlike many abandoned mills that became storage spaces for forgotten relics or junk, Quinebaug Mill was eerily empty. Milford's Aerosol Techniques Factory

When I arrived at the former Aerosol Techniques factory, I was filled with a mix of anticipation and curiosity. Meeting a group of new friends for a day of urban exploration in Connecticut, we had a lineup of intriguing abandoned sites on our agenda. Our itinerary included the hauntingly beautiful Seaside Sanatorium, a former hospital, along with a few other potential spots that we were less certain about. We chose the factory as our starting point, mainly because it offered easy access and was conveniently situated next to a Lowe's hardware store. Walking along a well-trodden path, our group made a seamless transition onto the property. The sense of camaraderie was palpable as we embarked on our adventure with eager enthusiasm.
