Archives #2: Cherry Red Roadster



Recently and also in the past, I have come across a handful of old cars abandoned in mills, power plants and other buildings. I have started to notice I always come across more frequently than is expected. In one location, I came upon 20-30 trucks and heavy machinery just sitting rusting away behind a fence. Maybe I will share a photo from that place in the future.  👀

Certified Concrete Industries Plant

Crisscrossing the tracks of the abandoned Long Island Railroad Penny Bridge Station, I found myself drawn to a towering relic of industrial might—a colossal metal structure that once belonged to Certified Concrete Industries of Queens. This behemoth, still standing tall over the rail line, piqued my curiosity and beckoned me closer. As I snapped photos, I scanned the perimeter for potential entry points, eager to explore the secrets of this imposing edifice. Unfortunately, I had no luck finding any entries in the well-maintained fence.  The site is currently utilized for parking and storing concrete pumping trucks, though concrete mixing is no longer conducted on-site. When I arrived at the former Aerosol Techniques factory, I was filled with a mix of anticipation and curiosity. Meeting a group of new friends for a day of urban exploration in Connecticut, we had a lineup of intriguing abandoned sites on our agenda. Our itinerary included the hauntingly beautiful Seaside Sanatorium, a former hospital, along with a few other potential spots that we were less certain about. We chose the factory as our starting point, mainly because it offered easy access and was conveniently situated next to a Lowe's hardware store. Graffiti Pier Collapse: What’s Next for Philadelphia’s Iconic Spot?

  One hot summer day in August 2016, nearly eight years after my last visit, I went back over my archived photographs of the vibrant graffiti hub that had become a hot spot on Instagram so long ago. I knew it was illegal to step onto the property—it’s mostly abandoned and isolated, with over 150 acres of old industrial coal structures. But I found it quite peaceful, and I wasn’t the only one there admiring the artwork. Despite Philadelphia having some dangerous neighborhoods, I never felt unsafe at the pier. Recently, Graffiti Pier made headlines again. On July 31, 2024, a 10-20 foot section of the pier’s eastern point collapsed into the Delaware River. This part of Pier 18, once a coal-loading site for the Reading Company in Port Richmond, has been in a state of limbo for decades.
