Former Empire State Dairy Company

Update May 2024:   The Highland at 2480 Atlantic Avenue, the site of the landmarked Empire State Dairy Company complex in East New York is now available for leasing. The site has undergone a massive redevelopment. Check it out sometime. The exterior scaffolding and netting are now down. The Architecture The property in question encompasses 0.72 acres, bordered by Schenck Avenue to the west, residential properties to the south, Barbey Street to the east, and Atlantic Avenue to the north. This site boasts a rich history of diverse commercial and industrial uses. Dating back to the 1890s, it served as a dairy bottling facility before accommodating companies such as the Royal Plastics Corporation and/or Allied Tile Co. After the cessation of dairy operations, businesses that utilized petroleum products, solvents, and hydraulic fluids occupied the site, leading to subsurface contamination over time. This new facility, established by Care For the Homeless , is set to be a cornerstone in the community, offering a sanctuary for 157 homeless men grappling with mental illness. Beyond just providing beds, this site encompasses an Article 28 community health center, dedicated to addressing the primary medical care and behavioral health needs of both its residents and the broader community. Rockaway Metal Products Corporation

Rockaway Metals Products (RMP) began as a sheet metal fabrication factory beginning in 1961. RMP occupied the site from 1971 to 1987 leaving a plethora of hazardous waste materials onsite. From 1990 to 2004 the building housed various tenants which even included an auto repair shop. Rockaway Metals a manufacturer of filing cabinets and other metal products closed down in 1987. It was leased a few years ago to different owners who did not manage the 4.85-acre parcel. The 155,000-square-foot building has long been an eyesore and trouble in the neighborhood since its closure. A coastal storm in March 2018 blew debris materials to adjacent properties. Rockaway Metals was acquired by Nassau County in 1995 by tax deed. The county has held onto the property for 22-plus years. In February 2011, the site was damaged by fire and condemned soon thereafter. Williamsburg’s CitiStorage Warehouse Demolished

The final piece of Bushwick Inlet Park is finally taking shape as demolition work has begun on the old CitiStorage warehouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This week, it was revealed that the demolition started over the summer and is set to wrap up by the end of the year. After that, an environmental assessment and cleanup will take place, depending on what contaminants are found in the soil, with funding help from ExxonMobil. Once the area is cleared and any harmful materials are handled, the Parks Department will design the new park space. Just a few months ago, I noticed more graffiti popping up along the warehouse's walls, a sure sign that the building’s security cameras were no longer working and that the owners weren’t too concerned about the property anymore.
